About Bodegas la Emperatriz
Bodegas La Emperatriz is located in the heart of the La Rioja Alta, the highest part of the region of Rioja, close to the town of Haro and mid way between the "Sierras" (mountain ranges) which border the region La Sierra de Cantabria to the north and La Sierra de la Demanda to the south. This estate has been called "La Emperatriz" for over a century as it belonged to Maria Eugenia de Montijo who as wife of Napoleon III, was Empress of France. Even in her days the estate was known for the excellent quality of its wines, winning prizes at shows in Paris as far back as 1876 and in Haro in 1884. Today Bodegas La Emperatriz has built on that wine-making tradition growing all its own grapes, unlike many Rioja producers, and using a technologically up to date winery to make high quality wines. Tempranillo, the principal grape variety of Rioja, on its own is capable of producing richly fruited wines but the real magic begins with its interaction with oak once the wines are in barrel. An extra layer of complexity and smoothness is added and with long ageing, some extra spiciness.
